This book kept me awake at night. I finished it in the 3 days. The premise intrigued me, and happily I found the payoff equally compelling. There is not a lot of violence, but there is some sexual violence. I found it disturbing, but it wasn't gratuitous and when I finished the book, I felt the scenes fit the plot. I mention it only so it doesn't take anyone by surprise. I'll definitely check out the next book by this author.Product details

We meet Michael, a happily married lawyer, whose wife, Ellen, is about to have a baby. They are meeting at the clinic where they will find out if they are having a girl or a boy. This will be the happiest day of his life. Until it isn't. It goes from bad to worse to unthinkable. Along with Michael, we readers don't know what is real and what is not. Which reality IS reality???
This book really keeps you glued to the pages. The story moves swiftly back and forth. The characters are drawn....no, wait! They are different or are they? It keeps you guessing til the end.
Then why only three stars? Well, the language was pretty vile at times and so were some of the sex scenes. But I really didn't like the ending. Yes, It answered the biggest question, but , for me, it just brought up more questions. I read the other reviews and they seemed satisfied, so maybe it's just me. But there is a sequel coming out next month, so maybe it's not just me.
Right from the start, the author had me. The characters in this novel are highly developed and give the effect intended. You're there, whether you want to be or not. You become so entwined with the dark side of the protagonist's mind, that I found myself unable to lay the book down because I was sure that on the next page, surely I would know what fresh hell we had just entered...and which reality was true.
The whole book leaves you feeling this way. You're sure, any moment, you're going to find some type of resolution, because no one could really be this splintered and live with it. The author does a profound job of taking us inside a fractured mind and sharing with us the despair and confusion that's tearing up his world.
This is writing at its best. I'm sure we haven't heard the last from this author, or seen just how far his achievements will climb with his style. I have a feeling he's going to cover a lot of ground, and all of it's going to take us on a heckuva ride.

Although I'm a lawyer, I'm not usually a big fan of legal thrillers, but this one blew me away. The fast pace and perfect plotting kept me turning the pages, dying to find out what happens and how to untangle the psychological twists and turns. Along the way, I got drawn into the fractured mind of the protagonist and felt his own inner torment.
The novel is more a smart psychological drama about a lawyer and those around him than a conventional case-driven legal thriller, but the telescoping of all the action into one intense day gives it an irresistible flow. And the ending provides all the pay-off promised by the build-up.... and more. Here's hoping this book spawns a sequel and a series!
This novel is a thrilling debut from author CJ Wilton. I’m glad I went with my gut and downloaded this quick, exciting read, which was written by a Yale Law School graduate.
Like its author, the protagonist is a lawyer, but this is not your typical legal thriller. Michael Flannery has a loving wife, Ellen, a stable job with a prestigious law firm, and a baby boy on the way. Life couldn’t get any better. However, it gets much worse when things start to quickly fall apart for Michael. When he arrives late to his wife’s OBGYN appointment, he learns that he has missed her. An angry Ellen calls him and tells him she’s fed up with his excuses and Michael can only apologize for missing such an important event.
But things get even stranger and scarier for Michael when he learns that Ellen couldn’t possibly have called him. She couldn’t have called because she has been dead for four days. Michael is incredulous at this revelation and swears that he just spoke with his wife, but his own nagging doubts about his own sanity rear their ugly head and Michael decides he must learn the truth.
From there, the novel takes an unexpected twist and becomes a very dark psychological thriller that leaves the reader (and the protagonist) wondering what is real and what is an illusion. When the truth is finally revealed about both Ellen and Michael (through a third person, Lizzy, the county coroner), I was left scratching my head and wondering how the author had pulled one over on me. I usually have twists figured out pretty quickly, but not this one. So well done to Wilton for stumping me on this book.
Caveat Emptor – this book is very, very dark and it is not for the faint of heart or the easily offended. The protagonist has quite a foul mouth and the author vividly describes some very sensitive and graphic events, especially toward the end. Personally, I think the book could have taken a step back in that department, but it did not impact my ultimate opinion of this book and its author.
If you can stomach dark subject matter and explicit language, then you should definitely read this book. It takes the reader down a curvy, twisted road where we examine the darkness of the protagonist’s mind and uncover a disturbing reality. Very well written and the author’s writing skill far surpasses that of most debut books. Definitely deserving of a good, strong review and the five star rating.
